WHERE CAN YOU GET GOOD SERVICE THESE DAYS?
Restaurant service, which used to be a common commodity, seems to have vanished in many of today’s modern food establishments. It has become fairly robotic, with a "Hi my name is Kyle, I will be your waiter" type opening line. You then get a glass of water, a menu, a recitation of the day's specials and then more disinterested service. Well, recently on our first visit to PEI on our summer vacation we encountered the Michelin level of service in a tiny restaurant in Montague PEI, called Windows on the Water.
We stopped for lunch at the above establishment on a cloudy drizzly day in June. We were seated by a friendly young man named Ray and provided with menus. My mind was more than slightly distracted at the time as our modern Acura’s dash centre informed us that the battery on our keyless car remote was getting weak. I was concerned with the situation, as if the remote battery dies, how would we start the car? We didn’t want to be stranded in a strange location, but what could we do?
As our food order was delivered I asked Ray, our waiter, if there was an auto dealership in the little town, thinking they might help us find a new battery for our remote. He asked what kind of car we had, make, model and year and he said he would be right back. Within a minute Ray returned with his iPhone and a YouTube video on exactly how to find and change our remote battery. We watched the video and within the minute our potential problem had an encouraging solution. Ray then informed us that there was a Dollar Store about a mile up the highway where we could probably get a replacement battery for about a buck. In fact, it was cheaper than that, as we found a package with three batteries for $1.25.
Having removed my weak battery concern from my troubled mind I was able to enjoy a very tasty bowl of clam chowder before we headed on our way. Not only did we have a quality lunch with good service, but with rather outstanding service. Ray, not only provided us with attentive table service but helping us with our keyless remote issue went way beyond the normal definition of service.
Ray and Windows on the Water are both nominated for our Restaurant Service Award for 2019. They should win hands down!
